Focusing on Self-Love and Compassion

Jacqueline Swietochowski, ATR

With Valentines around the corner, love and romantic relationships are often on people’s minds. This day is usually focused on people expressing and sharing affection with greetings and gifts to loved ones. With so much anxiety and uncertainty that we have gone through the last several months, why don’t we shift the focus away from getting love and gifts from others and focus on self-love?

There are many benefits when it comes to self-compassion, love, and self-acceptance. It can help one with mental health, confidence, and self-esteem. Many individuals struggle with finding self-love and acceptance and tend to seek this acceptance and validation from other individuals instead of seeing it within themselves. Here is a fun art directive you can try to help you explore your love and compassion within yourself.

I Am Heart Collage

Materials:

  • Pen/ Pencil
  • Paper/ Colored Construction Paper
  • Magazines
  • Scissors
  • Glue

Steps:

  1. Draw or cut out a heart and write I am in the center.
  2. Look in the magazine for words or images representing all your positive attributes, things that you love about yourself, and positive words/ quotes that you relate to. Cut them out.
  3. Glue the words and images inside the heart radiating out from the words I AM.
  4. Keep this image as a reminder of your compassion and love.

Questions to ask yourself:

  1. How does it feel to have all these strengths and attributes?
  2. Was it challenging to focus on your own self-love? If so, why?
