The Importance of Appreciating Your Partner

Jacqueline Swietochowski, ATR

April is Couple Appreciation Month. This is a time to remind us to keep the flames and romance alive all year long.

Relationships are not easy, and they often take a lot of work and effort. Having a healthy relationship consists of acceptance, appreciation, and acknowledgment. It is essential to make time for your partner and provide support to one another, especially during difficult times.

When we value the people in our lives, we take the time to do the little things to let them know we appreciate them. Providing your partner more support and thanking them can better your relationship and result in joy and satisfaction.

It is also important to remind ourselves that even though we often focus on receiving in a relationship, it is also essential to give. Providing your partner appreciation can make them feel good about themselves and make a difference in you and your partner’s life. Here are five simple ways you can show your appreciation to your partner.

  1. Thank your partner for the little things. Thanking them can make a big difference. Appreciate them for ironing your clothes or cooking dinner.
  2. Appreciate your partner for being there with you through your ups and downs. Your partner is the one investing their time in you more than anyone else.
  3. Enjoy your time together, be goofy and playful, have fun and laugh while appreciating one another.
  4. Pay attention to your partner when they speak to you. Make complete eye contact because this assures them that you are paying attention and appreciate whatever they have to tell you.
  5. Appreciate and express your love for your partner regularly. Do this by saying I love you before leaving or write a love note for your partner, reminding them how much you appreciate them.

When you invest time into your relationship/partner, it feels great for both you and your partner. Make appreciating your partner a priority to keep the spark in your relationship alive.
