Art Therapy

Art Therapy

Art Therapy is a modality of psychotherapy that incorporates art making as a central way to access, clarify, process, and express thoughts, ideas, and emotions. Artwork may be explored with the guidance of the art therapist by either addressing the process, the end product, or both. Aesthetics in art therapy are approached with curiosity and intrigue rather than judgment or critique. The art made in an art therapy session is considered to be an extension or reflection of the self, allowing individuals to look at parts of themselves from a new or different perspective.

Art Therapy & Trauma

The prefrontal cortex (where our rational decision making and language processing happens) and the hippocampus (where memory is stored and encoded) are impaired during and for some time after a traumatic experience. As a result, traumatic memories are experienced as snap shots of images, sensations, and emotions. Because of this temporary impairment, processing trauma is often very difficult to do with words. When asked to verbalize aspects of their traumatic experience, individuals often feel frustrated, discouraged, and ashamed. Art therapy provides a tool to heal that does not rely on a person’s ability to put what they experience into words. Rather, this modality offers a gentle and safe space for trauma survivors to explore and express their inner world without the added pressure to verbalize it.

How Do I Know If I’m Covered for Your Services?

You can verify your eligibility and benefits by calling the customer service number on the back of your insurance card. Some questions to ask are, “What are my outpatient mental health benefits?", “Do I have a co-pay, co-insurance, or deductible for outpatient mental health services?”, and “Are there any limits or authorizations required?”

Your exact coverage and the amount you will owe cannot be confirmed until a claim has been filed and processed by your insurance provider. Please note that not all services may be covered by insurance. This includes, but is not limited to, wellness workshops, and music therapy.
