Hello! My name is Sondra Malling, and this is my name sign. I work as a therapist at InTouch & Motion here in Chicago. It is now September, which means it’s Deaf Awareness Month. Here in America, most culturally Deaf people use American Sign Language (ASL). Maybe you’ve already noticed that I’m using ASL right now!
I’ve worked in the mental health field for over 12 years. In that time, I’ve worked with Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and DeafBlind people, from children, to teenagers, to adults and families. I’ve worked in group homes, hospitals, clinics, and now in private practice. My passion is working with Deaf people through their mental health challenges. I have seen so many deaf people struggle with their mental health due to language deprivation, isolation in their hearing families, and the hearing world, in addition to lack of culture and language access in mental health services.
My goal is to provide a safe therapy environment that supports the Deaf experience, Deaf identity, and Deaf culture. Here at InTouch & Motion, I provide one-on-one, couples, and family therapy for Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and DeafBlind individuals. We can communicate using ASL, Signed Exact English (SEE), SimCom, Oral, or Tactile ASL.
I am hearing, yes, but I do sign. I’ve been around the Deaf community all of my life. My specialties are depression, anxiety, mood instability, trauma-related issues, life changes, and the list goes on. I am also a dance/movement therapist, which means I can incorporate creative body, mind, and spirit techniques into therapy. This is all to support your growth as a whole person, we don’t just scratch the surface here. I’m providing therapy here in Chicago in the Old Irving Park area, as well as teletherapy for Illinois residents.
